A recent post on Fetus in fetu prompted me to research some of the web posts on Dermoid cysts.
My dealings with them were mainly of ovarian nature and one was over 17 cm in size containing teeth, hair, cartilage, bones and sweat glands and skin and lots of murky fluid. At the time, it was explained to me that this would have been the twin of the patient that was absorbed.
I found this article very interesting and wish to share it with you.

WHY IS THE MEDICAL SYMBOL A SNAKE ON A STICK...!?
The image of serpents wrapped around a staff is a familiar one in the medical field, decorating pharmaceutical packaging and hospitals alike. Snakes bites are generally bad news, and so the animal might seem ill-fitting as the symbol of the medical profession, but the ancient emblem actually has a quite a story…

My mother was the unfortunate victim of Pancreatic Cancer.
She was 48 years of age when she had vague symptoms of nausea and diarrhoea accompanied by backache. Her self diagnosis was that she had "gastric flu".
3 months later she was terminally ill and described the pain as worse than any pain of childbirth.
Towards the end, her abdomen was grossly distended and she developed yellow jaundice of the skin and heavily bile stained urine just one week before her…

Throughout our career we witness events that stay in the mind forever.
I recall a very thin lady from a foreign land, being admitted for eradication of a tape worm.
She was elderly and did not speak English so it was not possible to obtain an accurate history.
The medication ordered was TELMID from what I recall...I cannot find a reference to this drug on the web so may be outdated now. From what I recall, the drug paralysed the worm so that it would be evacuated…

Australia has been involved in the immunisation programme for Measles since 1976 and it has a proven record of reducing the number of deaths and outbreaks to a minimal number. However we do have anti vaccination activists who campaign against this and gradually more people are joining the bandwagon. Last year and also this year has seen an increased number of outbreaks and all can be traced to unvaccinated people (particularly those under 12 months who are too young to receive the…
