Ichthyosis Vulgaris:

-Ichthys means "fish" in ancient Greek.
-Robert Willan, the founder of modern day dermatology made the most accurate description in 1808. However references to the condition have be present for over 2000 years.
-It is the most frequent condition in the ichthyosis group.
It affects one out of 200 individuals and is inherited in an autosomal dominant form.
-It is caused by a mutation of filaggrin. (The same gene is mutated in Atopic Dermatitis). Filaggrin is important in the formation of the stratum corneum, therefore is essential to functional skin.
-It is associated with atopic dermatitis and keratosis pilaris.

-The condition appears with scaly lesions (dry skin) which can adopt a "crazy paving pattern" on the lower limbs.

-Treatment options include general skin care against dry skin, moisturizers and oral retinoids. No curative treatment exists.
