A Professional Networking Site for Doctors & Medical Students Worldwide

Hi :) so I was wondering, why is it that medical students and doctors tend to be so arrogant as compared to other educated people in other fields. what is it that makes us believe we are superior to others? We tend to look down on the qualifications of others and view other jobs as less important. and this seems to be the common attitude among medical students and doctors everywhere, not just in one particular medical school.

Actually arrogant persons are going to be arrogant.. it doesn't matter for them from which field they belong to..

and the fact that medical syllabus is one of the toughest syllabus on planet gives those people opportunity to show their arrogance.

and if those kind of people suppose belong to another field, they will find another way or fact to show off.. to express their arrogance.

and their is another fact that if a doctor or medical student casually asks about someones qualification, that persons thinks that he is asking me to show off.

but it doesn't mean that every doctor or medical student is arrogant.

that's my way to see it.

hmmmmm, there is surely something different with doctor's....i agree...!!

but surely not arrogance....it's like....like,doctor's sport this type of ''aura''....this type of......''attitude'' along with them.............and i guess that's b'coz.....this proffession demands........1 to be....and there is a thin line between arrongance and attitude....and doctors r generally misunderstood with their attitude...rather,being in this proffession 1 cannot just get along with ''arrogance''...........u need to hv that patience...that charm......else u will be at loss...and only be left over...with so called ''arrogance''...!!

I have been pondering on this overnight.

Many medical students come from a privileged background , having parents who are also in the medical profession. They have lived and breathed medicine from a young age and attitude can be transferred down the family line. However arrogance is not just limited to the medical profession..I often hear people refer to people from certain countries as being arrogant..Germans, Dutch, South Africans, etc etc. It is an individual thing and part of their character.

Med students who have not had family support for study, tend to be more down to earth and understanding towards their patients but I feel that the status symbol of many doctors is far more relaxed than in years gone by. Life was so formal and rigid then...Nowdays in my country, most Dr's introduce themselves to their patients by their first name.. Dr, Mr, and Professor is not mentioned

Society has put the medical profession on top of the pedestal..after all Doctors save lives! They are responsible for advising, prescribing, suggesting, referring and operating on us to keep us well..

Having travelled around the Asian world frequently, I no longer take offence when someone asks...How old are you? What is your profession? In fact this is just an indicator for them as to how they should address you...seniors first, then profession ?? Usually they pay respect to their elders first...that's where I fit in :)

perhaps it is also a deep seated fear. perhaps we use our arrogance to hide the fact that deep down we are scared. scared that we might not be competent to meet the challenges placed on us by society. maybe we hope that if we act like we know everything, people are less likely to question us and expose our weaknesses.

Well, a few act like that. The path to become a doctor is very hard. In Brazil, the exams are very competitive and medical students have to make a lot of sacrificies in personal life. Somehow it sounds more important than other jobs in their minds. I think it doesn't justifies this attitude. Doctors shouldn't be arrogant since they are caring of all kind of people. Thank God, there are not arrogant doctors as well.

its false ego!!that is all!!!
